Bar & Bat Mitzvahs at The Great Synagogue

Reaching the age of Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a milestone like no other - a proud moment for a young person, their family, and the entire community. It marks the start of a new chapter, a journey into Jewish adulthood, filled with learning, tradition, and celebration.

At The Great Synagogue, we are honoured to guide and support you through this special time. From your very first meeting with the Rabbi, to your big day in the Sanctuary, our team is here to ensure every step feels meaningful, joyful and unforgettable.

Preparing for Your Big Day

We provide experienced support for Torah reading (leining) and preparation, tailored to each child’s comfort and ability.

Bar Mitzvah boys will read as much of the Torah and Haftarah as they are confident with, and male relatives and friends are invited to receive special honours during the service.

Bat Mitzvah girls can address the congregation before Adon Olam, before receiving a heartfelt blessing from the Rabbi. Female relatives and friends are invited to participate in ark openings, and make relatives and friends are invited to receive special honours during the service.

We can also make arrangements for a Bat Mitzvah to be celebrated at a Friday evening service, if preferred.

Celebrating with the Community

The Bar or Bat Mitzvah service is not only a family moment - it is a shared celebration for the whole congregation. On Shabbat morning, the Rabbi will deliver a sermon with special attention to the Bar or Bat Mitzvah child, offering words of encouragement, inspiration and blessing.

After the service, the joy continues with a Shabbat Kiddush, giving family and friends the chance to gather, share stories, and celebrate together.

Creating Memories That Last a Lifetime

From honouring family traditions to making space for new ones, The Great Synagogue will work closely with you to ensure your celebration reflects your values and your story. Our majestic Sanctuary, rich history, and warm community provide the perfect setting for this once-in-a-lifetime milestone.

We can help with every aspect — from planning and preparation, to guiding relatives with their roles, to ensuring your child feels confident and proud on the day.
