Auf Rufs & Weddings
When a member of our community gets engaged, we want to celebrate with them on Shabbat morning with a special call up for an engaged man, or for a bride-to-be’s father or other male relative. The bride-to-be is invited to read the Prayer for the Congregation at the end of the service.
The week before the wedding, a bride can have a Shabbat Kallah, when the family will celebrate in the shule by receving special honours. A groom will have an aufruf, when he is called to the Torah with his relatives and friends.
A wedding at The Great Synagogue is a truly spectacular affair. The ambiance and atmosphere is unequalled anywhere in Sydney, and many families have been using The Great for their weddings for several generations. Our Rabbi will meet with the couple to get a better understanding of how they met, how they want their ceremony to be, as well as to give them any advice they may need. He will give lessons to the groom, while his wife, Hinda Young, teaches the bride. They are always invited for a Shabbat meal before the wedding. Under the chuppah, the Rabbi will give a meaningful address. Our office staff will enable you to make all the arrangements and advise you on the paperwork. We aim to make the process as smooth as possible.
